How to make the whole business go faster
Working on one piece by itself, like SEO, is like improving the oil filter when what you wanted was a faster car.

This one hit me while I was driving.
Some people seem to consistently tear a problem out of the whole picture so they can work on one piece of it, clinically, by itself. SEO is the example I keep running into: a business works on SEO and only SEO, without thinking about any of the other problems in the business. More than one founder has told me they’re paying for SEO and don’t really know what it is.
It’s kind of like pulling the oil filter out of your car, studying it and trying to make it better, when the result you actually want is for the car to go faster.
Well, technically, the oil filter is part of it. It’s just not the whole picture of what’s going on.

Start with the whole car
Every specialist you hire is doing the job they were hired for. The SEO agency sees an SEO problem, and a sales trainer sees the script. Each of them can be right about their piece while the business still doesn’t grow, because the pieces are connected. More traffic lands on a website that doesn’t say who you’re for, and the few leads it brings go to a sales process nobody changed.
So before you pay to perfect one part, name the result you actually want and look at how the parts connect on the way to it. Sometimes the answer really is the oil filter. Just look at the whole car first.
